Brevo vs Mailchimp: choose the meter before the interface
A practical, evidence-led decision guide. Product capabilities and limits are separated from anything that would require hands-on testing.
Brevo and Mailchimp can both run campaigns and automations, but their cost logic differs enough to change the shortlist. Brevo emphasizes email volume and can handle marketing plus transactional delivery. Mailchimp's marketing plans are strongly shaped by stored contact totals and audience organization.
Start with a 90-day workload
| Input | Why it matters to Brevo | Why it matters to Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Stored contacts | Entry evidence includes a contact boundary | Subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed marketing contacts can count |
| Monthly sends | A primary plan meter | Plan send limits still apply alongside contacts |
| Transactional messages | SMTP and API are documented channels | Treat as a separate product and price path unless confirmed |
| Audiences/lists | Contact management affects the workflow | Duplicate organization can increase count and complexity |
Brevo's retained public records start at $9 monthly for Starter and $18 for Standard at 5,000 sends and 500 contacts. Mailchimp's paid checkout is dynamic and promotional, so BenPicks retains the Free plan's 250 contacts and 500 monthly sends but refuses to invent a paid comparison.
Pick the operational boundary
Brevo is the more coherent candidate when application messages and campaigns should share one vendor, provided the team can isolate consent, permissions and incident risk. Mailchimp is reasonable when a familiar marketing workflow is more important and the buyer can keep audiences clean and obtain a stable renewal quote.
Run a campaign, one branch automation and a suppression test in both. Add an API-triggered informational message only to the Brevo lane. Compare log visibility, correction time and total checkout cost—not template count.
Test list hygiene as a financial control
Prepare a ledger of subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed, bounced and transactional-only addresses. Import equivalent lawful records and document what each platform counts. Then simulate the busiest month. A contact-led estimate can punish duplicated audiences; a send-led estimate can punish frequent lifecycle messages. The cheaper meter is the one aligned with real behavior, not the smaller headline.
Use the calculator for documented numeric results. Then read Brevo and Mailchimp for the evidence boundaries.
