beehiiv vs MailerLite: choose the operating model

A practical, evidence-led decision guide. Product capabilities and limits are separated from anything that would require hands-on testing.

beehiiv and MailerLite overlap on newsletters, forms and automations, but they optimize different businesses. beehiiv treats the publication, audience growth and monetization as one system. MailerLite is a broader small-business toolkit whose cost and access depend on subscribers, sends and feature caps.

Decide by the revenue system

At the retained entry points, beehiiv Launch supports up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, while MailerLite Free supports 250 active subscribers and 2,500 monthly emails. Those free tiers are not equivalents: they expose different parts of each product.

For 1,000 subscribers, beehiiv Scale is documented at $49 monthly. MailerLite's retained exact paid records cover 500 subscribers: Comfort is $12 monthly and Power $25. Do not extrapolate MailerLite's 500-subscriber price or treat beehiiv's publication tools as a free replacement for missing marketing capabilities. Run the actual workload through the Email Marketing Cost Calculator.

Migration changes the answer

Choose a sample issue, welcome flow, signup source and subscriber-state export. Test each platform with the same assets. For beehiiv, add a recommendation or paid-subscription requirement if it matters. For MailerLite, add a landing page and deliberately approach a feature limit.

Score time to publish the second issue, subscriber-state preservation, domain authentication, role fit and export completeness. Keep the old sender live until seed-list tests prove that automations and suppression behave correctly.

Do not compare free-plan ceilings alone

Forecast three states: launch, the next subscriber threshold and the first month with a major promotion. Add the number of operators and the features that generate or protect revenue. beehiiv's larger free subscriber ceiling may matter less than MailerLite's broader page and automation toolkit; MailerLite's lower paid entry may matter less if a publication needs native recommendation or subscription economics.

Read the individual beehiiv profile and MailerLite profile before committing. Neither product is a universal winner: beehiiv is the clearer publication business, while MailerLite is the clearer general email-and-page toolkit.
