beehiiv vs Kit
A practical, evidence-led decision guide. Product capabilities and limits are separated from anything that would require hands-on testing.
What does the newsletter need to sell? A publication funded by readers and sponsors has different operating needs from a course business that uses email to follow a purchase. beehiiv and Kit overlap, but that distinction gives you a better starting point than a contest between their cheapest plans.
Evaluate beehiiv when publishing, audience growth and newsletter monetization are central to the job. Evaluate Kit when subscriber segmentation, sequences and connections to a creator's products deserve the closest inspection. Neither recommendation means the other platform cannot perform those tasks. Both publish overlapping capabilities, and a real buying decision needs the selected plan's limits.
BenPicks has not tested which platform increases revenue, improves deliverability or takes less time to learn. The examples below are original planning scenarios, not account results.
Give the business a specific month
Assume a newsletter has 5,000 permission-eligible subscribers and publishes twice a week over four weeks: eight issues and 40,000 recipient-sends. Another 200 people join during the month and receive a three-email welcome sequence, all within that month. That adds 600 sends, making 40,600 in total.
For a publication scenario, assume four sponsor placements at an illustrative $150 each: $600 gross sponsorship revenue. These are placeholders, not market rates, available ad inventory or a promise that either provider will find a sponsor. Network eligibility, available campaigns, audience location and commercial terms must be checked separately.
For a course scenario, assume twenty completed purchases at $49: $980 gross sales. If that were attributed to the 5,000-person list, the simple buyer-to-list ratio would be 0.4%. It is not a conversion benchmark and does not prove email caused the sales. Payment fees, refunds, tax, platform charges and production costs have not been deducted.
The $600 and $980 examples describe different businesses. Their difference does not make one platform the winner. The question is whether the required publishing, sales and follow-up workflow fits the business you actually operate.

Compare access, then price
| Requirement | What to verify on both selected plans |
|---|---|
| Eight monthly issues | Subscriber band, send rules and additional publications |
| Sponsor-funded publication | Ad access, eligibility, reporting and payment terms |
| Paid newsletter | Subscription access, payment processing and exportability |
| Course follow-up | Purchase event, segmentation, sequence steps and integration |
| An editor helping the owner | Seats, permissions and approval handoff |
beehiiv's current pricing documentation lists a free allowance up to 2,500 subscribers. Our 5,000-person example is above that allowance. Kit currently advertises a free option up to 10,000 subscribers, but subscriber capacity does not establish access to every automation, growth or reporting feature. A larger free list is not automatically a like-for-like replacement for a paid workflow.
The public pages contain subscriber selectors and annual billing presentations. We have not verified a selected 5,000-subscriber checkout total for this comparison, so we do not present the default entry amount as that quote. Record the actual currency, billing term, annual charge, renewal price, seats and payment-related fees before committing.
Migration is more than an address export
Kit's official migration guide maps beehiiv posts to broadcasts and describes the transfer of subscriber fields and tags. It is the receiving vendor's documentation, not independent proof that every account state or paid subscription will move without work.
Keep original exports and suppression evidence. Reconcile subscriber status, tags, custom fields, publication membership, paid entitlements and the public archive. Rebuild one form and one welcome sequence before moving a full audience. Do not add an unsubscribed person back to marketing simply because an import accepted the record.
Suppose that inventory and rebuilding take nine hours at an assumed $30 per hour: $270 of internal work. A verified $18 monthly saving would need 15 months to recover that amount, before parallel billing or disruption. Staying is reasonable if the current platform meets the job and the migration adds no useful capability.
