ActiveCampaign vs GetResponse: model the operating system
A practical, evidence-led decision guide. Product capabilities and limits are separated from anything that would require hands-on testing.
ActiveCampaign is the automation-depth candidate; GetResponse combines automation with a wider self-service set of landing pages, funnels, webinars and creator functions. Neither should be selected from the longest feature list. The buyer must decide whether the constraint is journey logic or tool consolidation.
Price certainty differs
GetResponse documents Starter at $19 monthly and Marketer at $59 for 1,000 subscribers. Its billing uses peak active subscribers and contacts added during the month, while duplicated addresses across lists can count multiple times. Exact annual prepaid totals are not retained from rounded monthly-equivalent labels.
ActiveCampaign advertises a $15 starting point, but the current official surfaces do not provide a reconciled exact annual total for the retained scenario. It therefore remains a quote/checkout confirmation in BenPicks rather than an artificially cheap row.
Choose by failure mode
| If this fails | Prefer evaluating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Complex journey logic is opaque | ActiveCampaign | Automation is the central operating proposition |
| Several creator tools create fragmented work | GetResponse | Broader connected surfaces may replace subscriptions |
| Budget requires exact public totals | GetResponse monthly | A retained monthly amount exists |
| The list is duplicated across many lists | Neither yet | Clean the data model before comparing |
Build one state diagram, then implement it in both products with synthetic contacts. Test late events, re-entry, unsubscribes, missing attributes and manual correction. Separately count the external products GetResponse can genuinely replace; unused breadth has negative value.
Calculate the operator burden
Have someone other than the builder explain each branch and recover an intentionally broken journey. Measure diagnosis time, permissions required and evidence available after correction. For GetResponse, also test whether lists duplicate billing identities and whether the broader tools remove real subscriptions. For ActiveCampaign, require the full renewal quote before valuing deeper automation.
Keep a dated quote for both finalists so renewal comparisons use the same contact count, tax basis and billing term.
