Typecast is a voice and video editor where generation and playback are unlimited but downloads consume credits. That reverses the buying logic of character-metered APIs: you can audition without charge, but the chosen voice, exported duration and failed/repeated download attempts determine real spend.
> Distinctive strength: Users can audition and regenerate without spending credits, then pay when selected audio/video is downloaded. > > Where it stops being an advantage: Voice choice, exported duration and repeated downloads determine real cost, while the API is a separate subscription.
It also has three distinct surfaces. The web service combines an AI Voice Editor, timeline video production, talking avatars and cloning. Typecast Lite is an iOS-focused editor. The TTS API is separately subscribed and billed per character. Studio credits do not fund API calls.
Typecast's unlimited preview does not mean unlimited production, expressive voices need not consume the advertised average credit rate, and the current pricing/help pages disagree about cloning. Rather than smoothing over those boundaries, this review asks: which plan unlocks the exact voice, control and export you need, and what does each accepted minute really cost?
Preview freely, then price the accepted download
| Requirement | Shortlist implication |
|---|
| Cheap paid commercial voiceover | Basic starts at $5/month, but lacks speed/emotion controls and uses voice-dependent download credits. |
| Expressive direction | Pro is the first tier with emotion, Smart Emotion, intonation and pitch. |
| Voice cloning | Do not buy from the table alone: pricing and current help conflict on eligible plans/slots. |
| Video production | Basic 1080p; Plus+ 4K; one video export is documented up to 30 minutes. |
| Long audio | Current help documents a 45-minute audio download ceiling; split and test assembly. |
| Business/team work | Business is prescribed for organizations/multiple users, but roles and member entitlements need confirmation. |
| Application TTS | Buy separate API; one credit/character and different concurrency/pricing. |
| Sensitive voice/media | Obtain current legal terms, consent/deletion controls and assurance before upload. |
How does Typecast charge?
Current Studio pricing says voice generation and playback are unlimited on every plan. Credits are deducted when audio is downloaded. That makes preview cheap but places risk at the export boundary.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual invoice | Download credits | Published approximate minutes |
|---|
| Free | $0 | — | 3,000 lifetime | ~5 |
| Basic | $5 | $54 | 30,000/month | ~35 |
| Plus | $19 | $204 | 40,000/month | ~50 |
| Pro | $29 | $312 | 75,000/month | ~90 |
| Business | $69 | $744 | 200,000/month | ~250 |
Unused monthly credits do not roll over and are not refunded. The minutes are approximate, not a universal fixed conversion: different voices/settings can debit differently. Before committing, render a fixed 60-second script with each finalist and record the actual deduction.
At published estimates, annual nominal capacity is roughly:
- Basic: 420 minutes;
- Plus: 600 minutes;
- Pro: 1,080 minutes;
- Business: 3,000 minutes.
That arithmetic excludes alternate casts, re-edits, duplicate deductions, localized versions and rejected output. Compare accepted minutes, not the headline pool.
What does each plan actually unlock?
Free is a trial: three projects, trial characters, 16 kHz audio, 720p video, 1 GB storage, required attribution and no commercial licence. Advanced voice settings are largely unavailable except pauses.
Basic unlocks all voices, 44.1 kHz downloads, commercial use, 1080p watermark-free video, unlimited projects and 5 GB. It does not list speed or expression controls.
Plus adds speed, 4K and 30 GB. Pro adds basic/Smart/Custom Emotion, intonation and pitch, plus 50 GB. Business increases credits/storage and is positioned for businesses, institutions and agencies.
The price difference is therefore not only minutes. If delivery direction matters, Basic may be a false economy because Pro is the first published tier with the full expression toolset. Test whether a well-chosen stock performance on Basic beats repeated attempts on Pro; controls only create value when they reduce rejected output.
Why is voice cloning a purchase blocker right now?
Two current official surfaces disagree.
The pricing table says:
- Basic: one Instant Cloning slot;
- Plus: one slot plus Professional Cloning;
- Pro: two total slots;
- Business: ten total slots.
The current “Clone your voice” help article instead says cloning is available only on Pro/Business, with one free custom voice on Pro and two on Business; additional Business slots can be purchased.
This cannot be resolved through interpretation. Before paying:
- sign into the intended account;
- open the plan/checkout and cloning page;
- capture eligible clone types and slot counts;
- ask support to reconcile the two pages in writing;
- preserve the answer with the invoice.
The help article says Instant cloning uses about one minute of audio and finishes in about one minute; Professional uses 5+ minutes and can take about two hours. Custom voices are private to the owner, and downgrading to Free deletes them. These are vendor-documented behaviors, not proof that deletion covers samples, derived models and backups.
Use only a consenting speaker and retain explicit permission, allowed uses, channels, duration, revocation and deletion. The usage policy forbids unauthorized voice use, but the public workflow does not establish a buyer-grade consent archive or revocation log.
Can Typecast output be used commercially?
Paid Studio plans list a commercial licence. Current usage policy grants a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use compliant generated audio personally or commercially. Previously downloaded output can continue to be used after the subscription ends, but modification or new download requires renewal.
Important restrictions remain:
- Free output is personal/non-commercial and requires attribution;
- voices cannot be redistributed as isolated sound libraries;
- voice actors retain rights in their models;
- output cannot misrepresent the actor or exceed approved use;
- political advertising/messaging needs express written permission;
- separate branches/companies need separate subscriptions;
- automated-generation programs, API and custom-voice work require separate agreements.
Preserve the plan, policy version, source rights, intended campaign and final downloaded master. A commercial plan does not clear a third-party script, likeness, song or brand.
What are the export limits and failure costs?
Current help documents MP3/WAV audio at 8, 16 or 44.1 kHz depending on plan. Audio project downloads are limited to 45 minutes. Video downloads are limited to 30 minutes; Free is 720p, Basic 1080p and Plus+ 4K.
A confirmed download deducts credits immediately and cannot be cancelled. More importantly, current troubleshooting warns that repeatedly retrying a stalled download can create separate attempts and multiple deductions. The safer process is:
- review playback before confirmation;
- confirm once;
- wait for the job;
- if stalled, close the window;
- retrieve the same file from Download History rather than creating another job.
Paid plans list unlimited download history/re-download. Free history lasts seven days. Test this with a disposable file, and record job IDs/credit balance before and after.
Does Typecast support teams?
Typecast positions Business for teams and explicitly tells businesses, institutions and agencies to use it. Current help says multiple users should use Business rather than share a lower-tier account.
However, the retained pricing table does not clearly expose seats or the “Add team members” entitlement. Public evidence inspected does not establish role types, approval workflow, clone visibility, audit history, usage attribution or offboarding.
For a real organization, ask:
- how many seats are included and what additions cost;
- whether projects/clones belong to user or organization;
- administrator, creator and reviewer permissions;
- approval before download;
- per-user credit attribution;
- audit/export history;
- transfer/deletion on departure;
- separate subscriptions for branches/subsidiaries.
If these are absent, Typecast can still work as a creator tool but not as a governed shared production system without external controls.
What is separate about the Typecast API?
The API is its own subscription and uses one credit per character:
| API tier | Monthly price | Included credits | Concurrency | Overage |
|---|
| Free | $0 | 15,000 | 2 | none published |
| Lite | $15 | 200,000 | 5 | $0.09/1k, bought in $9/100k units |
| Plus | $280 | 4,000,000 | 15 | $0.08/1k, bought in $100/1.25m units |
| Enterprise | custom | custom | custom | custom |
API marketing cites 500+ voices and SSFM 3.0. It also assigns 50 Instant-clone slots to Lite, 800 to Plus and unlimited to Enterprise—again, separate from Studio clone slots.
For one million characters, Lite overage is $90 after included volume; Plus's published overage rate is $80 per million. But the monthly fee, fixed purchase increments, failed/retried input, SSML, monitoring and human QA determine real cost. Benchmark a frozen corpus and measure accepted characters, latency percentiles, throttling and error behavior.
What happens to uploaded content and personal data?
The accessible privacy and original terms surfaces are dated 2021. That age is itself a procurement concern.
The retained terms grant a royalty-free, worldwide and time-unlimited licence to uploaded content for displaying, promoting, operating/improving the service and researching new services. The privacy page lists AWS, Firebase, Intercom, Stripe and other processors and describes targeted-ad behavioral sharing with Facebook/Google.
Personal-data retention includes:
- account/service data until termination and resolution of claims/obligations;
- contract/payment records for five years;
- complaint/dispute records for three years;
- advertising records for six months;
- destruction when purpose/legal retention ends.
That is not an object-level lifecycle for projects, generated files, clone samples and derived models. Before sensitive use, obtain the current governing terms/privacy policy, DPA, processor list, deletion schedule and technical assurance. Do not assume an old public policy is the current contract simply because it remains accessible.
When Typecast's download-credit model fails the job
Do not shortlist Typecast when:
- you need a guaranteed cloning entitlement without written reconciliation;
- one 45-minute audio/30-minute video ceiling breaks the pipeline;
- you need full expression controls on a Basic budget;
- your organization requires documented roles/audit logs not publicly established;
- old content-use/privacy terms are unacceptable and current contractual documents are unavailable;
- a separate API plan is required but only Studio has been budgeted;
- the intended content violates voice-actor/political/usage restrictions;
- voice-dependent credit deductions cannot be forecast from a trial.
How should you test Typecast?
Use a fixed, production-shaped test:
- Prepare a 45-minute, two-language script with difficult names, numbers, acronyms, emotion and long paragraphs.
- Create a 30-minute video timeline with representative media.
- Compare one Trial/basic voice and two expressive candidates without downloading.
- Download the same fixed 10-minute selection once per voice; record exact credit debit and file properties.
- Re-download one unchanged paid file only from history and confirm no new debit.
- Simulate a slow/stalled job without pressing Download again; verify recovery.
- Test 16/44.1 kHz MP3/WAV and 1080p/4K imports in the real editor/LMS.
- Confirm intended-plan clone type and slots in the account before purchase.
- With a consenting disposable speaker, test Instant/Professional input, private visibility and downgrade deletion.
- For a team, test seats, permissions, ownership, usage attribution and offboarding.
Score cost per accepted minute, rejection rate, reviewer time, export reliability and governance. “Unlimited generation” is valuable only when the final accepted download is predictable.
Does unlimited preview earn a paid download workflow?
Typecast's low Basic price and unlimited auditioning can make it an efficient creator tool. Pro is the meaningful expression tier, and Business is the vendor-prescribed organizational tier. The current clone-plan contradiction and old legal/privacy surfaces are not minor footnotes: they are reasons to confirm the account and contract before relying on the service.
Shortlist Typecast when its chosen voice passes blind review, the actual export debit fits the budget, and the usage terms fit the project. Exclude it when you need unambiguous clone governance, audited collaboration or current sensitive-data assurances that public evidence does not establish.
Main unknown: the current contractual and operational treatment of sensitive project/clone data, including consent evidence and object-level deletion.
Continue with the AI Voice category, compare embedded options in the AI Voice API guide, or apply the voice-generation cost protocol to the actual download debit.
