View evidence profile →Brave Search's strongest proposition is structural: a private-by-default consumer search service built on Brave's own index, plus APIs for teams that need web results or grounded answers. Consumer privacy and API data handling are related but not identical contracts.
> Distinctive strength: Independent web index combined with privacy-oriented consumer search and developer access. > > Where it stops being an advantage: Independent does not mean complete; regional and long-tail coverage still require measurement.
| Surface | Documented boundary | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer search | Free, ad-supported search with private ads; Premium removes ads | Test coverage before paying for presentation |
| Ask Brave | Conversations are server processed and erased after 24 hours of inactivity, per privacy notice | Do not include personal data unnecessarily |
| Search API | $5 per 1,000 requests, with monthly promotional credit and 50 rps listed | Budget retrieval and full usage separately |
| Answers API | $4 per 1,000 queries plus input/output token charges | Model the entire answer cost and validation burden |
Run 150 queries across current news, local intent, technical documentation and obscure known pages. Score recall, top-three usefulness, index freshness, locale accuracy and answer citation support. For API use, retain response size and token counts so the Answers estimate can be reproduced.
The API privacy notice says queries may be retained up to 90 days for billing and troubleshooting. That differs materially from the consumer-search privacy promise and must be evaluated separately.
Avoid Brave Search when missing-source recall exceeds the agreed threshold, enterprise Zero Data Retention is required but not contracted, or the team needs exhaustive research. Compare Kagi, You.com and Tavily.
