|---|---|
| Daily sharing | Private, family Shared and subset vaults serve different audiences. |
| Recovery prerequisite | Code recovery needs linked-email access; organizer recovery requires another eligible helper and member participation. |
| Plan scope | Public display, 9 October 2026: derived EUR 51.72 for year one and EUR 69.00/year at the displayed original rate (monthly equivalents × 12; approximate if rounded). Commercial context
Alternatives stay within the same vertical and use current internal profile routes.
Separate ordinary household sharing from a trusted contact’s authority to read or take over an individual vault.
View evidence profile →1Password deserves a closer look when a household wants a documented route back into an account after losing its normal sign-in details. The key buying question is whether you can preserve both a recovery code and access to the email account associated with 1Password. A recovery code is not a substitute for every other dependency.
That distinction is more useful than a general promise that a family manager will “keep everyone safe.” The documentation describes what changes during recovery and how it interacts with another recovery route. It does not establish that every person in your household will be able to complete the process without help.
This profile evaluates public documentation. BenPicks has not created a 1Password account, tested autofill, recovered a vault or compared either vendor's security. Recommendations below are conditional on the documented prerequisites and the stated billing and migration limits.
| Your requirement | What is documented | What to settle before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Recover using material kept outside normal sign-in | Recovery-code use requires access to the account's email; the flow creates a new Secret Key and account password | Keep the code accessible and account for email access |
| Preserve two-factor authentication through code recovery | The documented code-recovery flow leaves enabled two-factor authentication on | Do not assume a recovered account bypasses that protection |
| A family organizer helps with recovery | Organizer-initiated recovery exists as a separate route and deactivates an existing recovery code | The helper starts and completes the process; the affected member follows an email and creates new credentials |
| Know how many people a Families subscription includes | Current pricing and Families support specify five included people | This is five total, not an organizer plus five; additional members are prorated, with their exact charge to confirm |
| Move everything from another manager | Not established by this assessment | Confirm item formats, passkey/attachment handling and an exit path before cancellation |
The documented recovery-code process verifies access through the email address linked to the account. It then issues a new Secret Key and requires a new account password. You must sign back in on your devices afterward. Previously enabled two-factor authentication stays on, and the recovery code remains valid for future use.
These details give you specific questions to answer before a purchase: where will the code be available if the usual device is unavailable, can you still reach the linked email account, and what other authentication material will be needed afterward? The right answer cannot simply be “inside the account I am trying to recover.” That is a dependency to examine, not a claim that this article has tested or ruled out every recovery arrangement.
If an organizer initiates recovery for a family account, the existing recovery code is deactivated; a new code can be generated after completion. Treat that as a maintenance event. A previously printed or stored code should not be assumed valid after organizer recovery merely because it was valid before.
The documentation tells users without access to their linked email to contact support. That instruction is not evidence of a guaranteed recovery outcome. This profile therefore does not promise recovery when the required email access is missing.
A family organizer can initiate recovery for another member. The member receives an email, confirms the address and creates new credentials; the organizer must then complete recovery before the member regains access. Unlike code recovery, this route resets two-factor authentication. The documentation recommends at least two people able to recover accounts so one can help when the other cannot sign in. The family recovery-plan guide explicitly distinguishes helping another person from recovering your own account as an organizer; code recovery remains a separate route.
This is a cooperative account-restoration flow, not evidence that an organizer can read a private vault on demand or act without the affected member. If your requirement is access when the owner cannot participate, do not assume this workflow answers it.
For everyday sharing, each member has a Private vault and access to the family Shared vault. You can create another vault for a subset of people—for example, two adults managing a utility account. Items are available to everyone with access to that vault. To stop sharing an item, the documented options include moving it into Private or deleting it from the shared vault; a member can also be suspended or removed.
That model gives a useful starting map: personal email in Private, household Wi-Fi in Shared, adult-only administration in a separate shared vault. These are proposed examples, not configurations BenPicks tested. Removing access cannot make an already learned password unknown: review the underlying service's credential separately when appropriate.
The official page captured 9 October 2026 displayed EUR4.31 per month, billed yearly, for Families during the first twelve months, alongside an original EUR5.75 monthly equivalent. Multiplying the displayed monthly equivalents by twelve gives EUR51.72 for the first year (4.31 × 12) and EUR69.00 at the displayed original rate (5.75 × 12). These are derived figures, approximately so if the monthly display is rounded—not captured checkout totals or a guaranteed renewal charge. The promotion is limited to new customers subscribing directly through 1Password.com with annual billing; app-store subscriptions are excluded. The same page's FAQ describes a USD offer, but that is a different currency presentation, not an exchange-rate conversion.
The base plan includes five people total: both the plan table and the Families support page specify this. Additional accepted family-member invitations incur prorated charges, according to the billing documentation. The exact extra-member price and a buyer-specific tax/renewal quote are not established here. Do not count a guest as another full family member: the Families guide limits a guest to one vault and no Private vault.
For a useful quote, record country/currency, annual versus monthly term, included people, extra-member charges, initial amount, tax and renewal rule. The crossed-out original price is not a contractual guarantee of the next invoice. Removing a member within the five included people does not reduce the base bill.
The captured pricing page advertises a fourteen-day trial without a credit card. Treat it as a chance to check your own workflow, not a BenPicks test. The billing documentation says cancellation without account deletion still allows viewing and exporting data; it does not establish that every format or destination will preserve every item.
A purchase can look straightforward until it meets the records you actually have. List your login items, secure notes, attachments and website passkeys. Ask which import/export path supports each item type, whether any content is omitted and which fields need inspection after transfer. This review has not established complete format parity for 1Password, so it cannot promise a lossless move.
Keep the migration decision separate from the recovery decision. Recovery of an account does not establish that every record from a different manager will import, and the ability to import one format does not prove you can export it in a form another manager accepts.
Use a small non-sensitive evaluation set and record discrepancies before considering a full move. Preserve access to the old system until the records and ordinary sign-in paths you rely on have been checked. No real vault was exported or tested for this article. Exact offline behavior, minimum client versions and the household's device-specific flow remain evidence gaps when they determine the purchase.
Continue evaluating 1Password if its documented code-recovery prerequisites match an arrangement you can maintain: an accessible code, access to the linked email, a plan for signing devices back in and an understanding of how organizer recovery affects that code. That is a concrete operational fit, not proof of superior cryptography or usability.
Do not recommend it on the basis of guaranteed email-loss recovery, an assumed free sixth household seat, a permanent first-year discount or assumed passkey migration. If another person must be able to retrieve information when the owner cannot participate, compare that exact scenario against the documented family-organizer process rather than treating self-recovery as equivalent.
The Bitwarden profile offers a different documented access model: a prearranged contact with view or takeover permission. Use the comparison to decide which dependencies your household can actually maintain, not which brand has the more reassuring marketing language.

Organizer recovery deactivates current code; generate new afterward.
No linked-email access leads to support instruction, not a guaranteed outcome.
Organizer-assisted process requires helper begin, member email/new credentials, helper completion; resets 2FA and needs resignin; two eligible helpers advised.
Organizer cannot use organizer role to recover own account; second organizer advised, separate code recovery available.
Shared vault audience and subset vaults; move/delete shared items or suspend/remove member. Not erasure of prior knowledge.
Five included people; Private and Shared vaults; guests single vault without Private or family Shared.
EUR 4.31 Families annual-billed monthly equivalent first 12 months vs original 5.75; eligible new direct annual customers, excludes appstores. Separate USD FAQ not currency conversion.
Public 14 day trial no credit card displayed; no actual trial executed.
Five included members, extra accepted members prorated; removing within included count does not lower base bill. Extra rate not captured.
