SE Ranking vs Semrush: Three Sites or Ten Clients?

A practical, evidence-led decision guide. Product capabilities and limits are separated from anything that would require hands-on testing.

A freelancer maintaining three sites should not buy an agency suite simply because it contains more tools. An agency managing ten clients should not choose an entry plan before checking seats, project limits and the reporting work that sits outside the subscription.

SE Ranking and Semrush both publish broad SEO capabilities. Compare the actual package you would buy, including any AI-search, content or reporting additions. This page does not claim that one provider's keyword database is more accurate or that either will improve rankings by itself.

Write the brief before opening the pricing page

WorkloadFreelancer exampleAgency example
Sites or client projects310
Keywords per project150250
Total tracked keyword assumptions4502,500
Pages in one full crawl per site1,2008,000
Monthly full-crawl assumptions1 per site2 per site
Total pages to audit3,600160,000

Those are original planning assumptions. Location, device and search-engine combinations may affect how a selected provider counts tracked keywords; verify its rule before treating a spreadsheet total as billable usage. Crawl depth and recrawls can likewise change the page budget.

What the current public displays establish

The SE Ranking presentation captured for this article shows a package with ten projects, one manager seat, 2,000 tracked keywords and 250,000 monthly audit pages. A second displayed package has thirty projects, three manager seats, 5,000 keywords and two million audit pages. Those boundaries suggest different fits: the freelancer example sits below the first workload limits, while our 2,500-keyword agency example exceeds that displayed 2,000-keyword allowance.

Capacity alone is not an eligible purchase decision. Confirm reporting, sharing, features, billing term and the actual selected tier. The captured SE Ranking page displays euro prices, while Semrush displays dollars; this comparison does not subtract them or invent an exchange rate.

Semrush's current page separates SEO and other toolkits and presents several subscription combinations. Its entry SEO display includes 500 tracked keywords. That is above the freelancer's assumed 450, but a keyword allowance does not establish every required project, crawl, seat or report capability. A larger package or addition must be priced against the complete brief.

The reporting bill can outweigh a small saving

Suppose an agency spends 25 minutes preparing each of ten monthly client reports. That is 250 minutes, or about 4.17 hours. Reducing the assumed handling time to fifteen minutes would remove 100 minutes. At an illustrative $40 per hour, that time is worth about $66.67 monthly.

This is a sensitivity calculation, not a claim that either platform delivers the reduction. Check permissions, report branding, scheduled delivery, client access and the corrections an account manager still needs to make. One unusable report template can turn a theoretical saving back into manual work.

For the freelancer, assume moving saved keywords, tags and reporting templates takes six hours at $40: $240. If comparable verified quotes differ by $20 per month, simple payback is twelve months, before parallel billing and disruption. Do not migrate solely for a lower headline price without checking that horizon.

Give both candidates the same evaluation task

Use one site you are authorised to analyse, a fixed keyword set and the same crawl boundary. Inspect why reported issues matter and whether an analyst can verify them. Separate coverage differences from confirmed errors; a bigger issue count is not proof of a better audit.

Choose the package that covers the job with an acceptable operating cost and handoff. Staying with your current suite is reasonable if switching would lose useful history or recreate established reports without a material gain.
