Clearscope is no longer only a content-grade editor. Its current plans combine topic discovery, Drafts, published-page monitoring, prompt tracking and AI-answer visibility. That gives a content team one workflow from deciding what to write through monitoring whether important pages and brand prompts remain visible.
> Distinctive strength: A focused content team can connect topic discovery and drafting to published-page monitoring and AI-answer prompt visibility without adopting a broad SEO suite. > > Where it stops being an advantage: The subscription is inefficient when page and prompt capacity does not lead to repeated editorial decisions.
The trade-off is focus. Clearscope does not try to replace a broad technical SEO or backlink suite. The subscription is valuable when editors repeatedly need defensible research and revision guidance for a bounded page portfolio. It is expensive when the team buys hundreds of page or prompt slots but changes few decisions.
BenPicks has not operated a paid Clearscope workspace for this review. The analysis uses current official pricing, product/support documentation, terms and privacy material. A content grade, AI mention or vendor case study is not treated as proof of factual quality, rankings or business impact.
The Clearscope decision in 60 seconds
| Question | Source-led answer |
|---|
| Best fit | Collaborative editorial team optimizing and monitoring a bounded portfolio of commercially important pages. |
| Poor fit | Buyer expecting technical crawling, backlink analysis and broad rank tracking in the same subscription. |
| Essentials | $129/month: 50 tracked prompts, 50 pages, 20 Topic Explorations and 20 Drafts monthly. |
| Business | $399/month: 300 prompts/pages, 50 explorations, 20 Drafts and dedicated account management. |
| Users | Unlimited users and projects on public tiers; capacity is metered elsewhere. |
| Trial | 14 days advertised. |
| Main unknowns | Active-service retention, AI subprocessors/provider retention, assurance detail, AI coverage and generated-output rights. |
What does Clearscope cost now?
The public pricing is unusually clear about base units:
| Plan | Monthly price | Tracked prompts | Pages | Topic Explorations/month | Drafts/month |
|---|
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Essentials | $129 | 50 | 50 | 20 | 20 |
| Business | $399 | 300 | 300 | 50 | 20 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |
Enterprise adds custom agreements and credits, crawler whitelisting and SSO. Every plan lists unlimited users and projects. Additional pages are advertised at $25/month on Essentials and $15/month on Business; additional Drafts at $50 and $20 respectively.
The striking detail is that Business does not increase the public Draft allowance above 20. It mainly expands tracked prompts, monitored pages and Topic Explorations. A team that produces many new briefs but monitors few pages may therefore need Draft add-ons, while a team managing a large existing library may find Business economical.
Model each unit separately. Count distinct pages to monitor, prompts that lead to a decision, explorations used for planning and new or refreshed Drafts. Include abandoned analyses and seasonal peaks. Do not divide the subscription only by published articles when much of its value—or waste—sits in inventory and visibility tracking.
What does the Content Grade actually measure?
Clearscope's support documentation explains that a Draft scrapes top-ranking content and calculates term importance from how often a term appears in those competitor articles. The editor updates a grade as terms are included. Typical-use ranges and recommended word counts also come from the analyzed result set.
That transparency is useful. It establishes what the grade is and what it is not. It measures relative topical coverage against current pages. It does not inspect every fact, establish originality or separate a result ranking because of content from one ranking because of authority, links, freshness or brand demand.
For five target queries, retain the analyzed SERP and classify every result by intent and page type. Review suggested terms in four groups: necessary, useful, irrelevant and potentially misleading. Have an editor improve the page for the visitor without seeing the grade, then compare with a score-led revision. Pass when the recommendations surface missing buyer questions without making the article derivative or repetitive.
Can you correct a contaminated SERP analysis?
Yes, Clearscope documents term filters and domain scraping rules. An organization can prevent specified terms from appearing and exclude a domain, disable scrolling or limit scraping to a CSS selector. The vendor notes these changes do not alter older Drafts and may change grading.
This is an important control for mixed-intent searches, aggregators, forums, location pages or an irrelevant namesake. Use it deliberately rather than deleting terms only because they lower the score. Preserve the original and filtered recommendation sets, record why each domain was excluded and confirm that the new set better represents the intended reader.
Draft terms export to CSV with variants, importance, AI presence, typical-use minimum/maximum, current use and semantic group. That makes review and long-term comparison possible outside the interface.
What do AI Term Presence and prompt tracking establish?
AI Term Presence marks recommended terms that appear in sampled Gemini and GPT responses and lets users inspect the response context. Prompt tracking monitors selected prompts across ChatGPT and Gemini for brand mentions and change over time. Query fan-out is presented as visibility into searches an AI system triggers while constructing an answer.
These are observations of configured prompts and sampled systems, not a census of AI visibility. Answers can vary by model, date, geography, account state and personalization. A brand mention can be positive, negative, incidental or sourced from an unhelpful page. A term appearing in an answer does not mean inserting it into a draft earns a citation.
Before buying Business for 300 prompts, define the decision attached to each prompt. Use stable commercial, comparison and problem questions. Record model/surface, location, date, answer, citations and whether the observation triggered a defensible content action. Remove prompts that generate dashboard activity without changing a decision.
Is Draft with AI a complete writing system?
Clearscope's integrated AI Draft workflow moves from a query or topic to an outline and first draft. Official product material says it can use an uploaded writing sample and audience/format preferences. The editor then applies the same term, question, readability and competitor guidance.
That integration may save setup time. It does not remove the need for a retained source set. An uploaded style sample can reproduce voice while preserving an incorrect fact. A draft shaped by current competitors can inherit their omissions or consensus errors.
Test five source-led briefs containing dates, numeric comparisons, exceptions and explicit unknowns. Preserve the prompt, writing sample, generated draft and every correction. Blind-grade factual survival, source support, decision coverage, repetition and voice. Measure total time through verified publication, not the percentage of text generated.
Should you use Boost Content Grade automatically?
Boost Content Grade identifies unused recommended terms and inserts them into contextual positions. Clearscope says the feature aims to preserve readability and the core message rather than rewrite the draft.
Treat it like any automated editorial change. Retain a diff. Reject insertions that add no information, change meaning, disturb terminology or create an unsupported association. Run a reader-focused edit after the grade-focused pass. The correct target is not A++; it is the minimum justified coverage that helps the visitor make a better decision.
For regulated, legal, medical or financially consequential content, automatic term insertion should never bypass domain review. A statistically common term can still be wrong for the specific scope.
How useful is Content Inventory?
Content Inventory monitors published pages and includes prioritization views such as Striking Distance and Content Decay. This can help an editor allocate refresh work instead of rerunning isolated reports. Essentials covers 50 pages; Business 300, with paid additions.
Test the inventory against a known portfolio. Include pages with true decay, stable seasonal patterns, intentional low traffic, changed search intent and commercial value not visible in rankings. Compare its priorities with analytics, conversions, source freshness and business importance. The feature earns its page allowance when it changes refresh order correctly—not when every score movement creates work.
Can external writers collaborate safely?
Clearscope advertises unlimited users/projects, shared Draft links with Guest Mode, and integrations with Google Docs, Microsoft Word and WordPress. Unlimited seats reduce a common collaboration tax. Guest links can also expose a draft beyond the account if link handling is weak.
Test the intended roles: administrator, strategist, internal editor and external writer. Confirm what each can view, edit, export and share. Rotate or revoke a guest link and remove a contractor. For publishing integrations, review permissions and whether a draft can overwrite live content without a separate approval gate.
Support material publishes availability from 7am to 6pm CDT, Monday–Friday. Pricing advertises onboarding, training and priority support on every plan; Business adds a dedicated account manager. No response/restoration commitment was established from the public material reviewed.
Who owns the content and what happens at exit?
Clearscope's terms say the customer owns Customer Data and derived data provided back through the service. They also allow Clearscope to analyze service, use and performance information—including Customer Data and derivatives—for development, diagnostics and improvement, with external disclosure limited to aggregate or de-identified form.
An official 2025 article states that uploaded brand voice, drafts and style examples are used for the customer's work and do not train a global model or shape other customers' results. That is a useful explicit vendor statement. Procurement should still obtain the current provider/subprocessor list, provider-side retention and contractual AI data terms.
On termination, terms provide 30 days to retrieve Customer Data. After that, Clearscope may—but is not required to—delete stored data. Export before cancellation and request the active-service and backup deletion schedule. Term CSV and shared/exported content are documented; verify whether prompts, AI answers, inventory history, writing samples and account settings also leave cleanly.
What security evidence is public?
Enterprise advertises SSO and crawler whitelisting. The privacy policy describes third-party vendors/hosting and reasonable protection, but it was updated in 2017. Public material reviewed did not establish current SOC or ISO evidence, encryption scope, SCIM, detailed audit logs, incident SLA or pentest material.
That absence is not proof of weak controls. It means an enterprise buyer should request a current security pack and data-processing agreement rather than inferring assurance from logos or customer names.
Who should shortlist Clearscope?
Shortlist it when content optimization, refresh prioritization and selected AI/search visibility are recurring jobs; many collaborators need access; and the organization prefers a focused, explainable editor over a sprawling suite. The 14-day trial is enough to test a carefully prepared sample, not an entire content program.
Look elsewhere when the main need is technical crawling, log analysis, backlink research or broad rank tracking. Also pause when hundreds of Drafts—not monitored pages or prompts—drive the workload, because add-on economics may dominate the base plan.

A fail-closed Clearscope pilot
- Freeze the plan, trial dates, prompts, pages, explorations, Drafts and add-on pricing at signup.
- Select five new and five decaying pages with business value, retained sources and acceptance criteria.
- Capture original SERPs and classify intent/page type before reviewing terms or grades.
- Record every excluded term/domain and compare the original and corrected recommendation sets.
- Produce editor-led and score-led revisions; blind-grade factuality, uniqueness and visitor utility.
- Generate AI drafts from difficult source packs; measure source survival and total correction time.
- Run Boost Content Grade on copies only; inspect every insertion in a retained diff.
- Configure a small prompt set; record model/surface, citations and actual editorial action from each observation.
- Compare Content Inventory priorities with analytics, conversions, seasonality and source freshness.
- Test guest links, roles, integrations, exports and contractor removal.
- Reconcile actual page, prompt, exploration and Draft usage under normal and peak workloads.
- Obtain current retention, subprocessors, AI provider terms, output rights and security evidence; test complete export before cancellation.
Pass only when recommendations and visibility observations improve real decisions, AI features reduce total verified work, permissions and exports fit the team, and unresolved data/assurance issues fit policy. A higher grade alone is not a pass.
