Tavus vs HeyGen LiveAvatar: Buy the Conversation Pipeline Deliberately

Tavus and HeyGen can put a responsive face inside an application. They enter the architecture from different directions. Tavus sells a Conversational Video Interface that can manage perception, turn-taking, STT, LLM, TTS and rendering while allowing components to be replaced. HeyGen extends a broad recorded-avatar ecosystem into LiveAvatar. The right choice depends on how much of the conversation stack the buyer wants one vendor to own.

Tavus publishes a conversation-centred allowance

Starter is $59 per month with 100 conversational minutes, ten generated-video minutes, three monthly Replica trainings and three concurrent streams. Growth is $397 with 1,250 conversational minutes, 100 generated minutes, seven trainings and ten concurrent streams on the reviewed pricing surface.

Tavus documents that billing begins when the Replica joins and waits, not only when the user speaks. Session creation, timeout and cleanup therefore affect cost. Its API also exposes test mode for integration checks without a live join.

HeyGen separates the live product from recorded API pricing

HeyGen's recorded-video API is pay-as-you-go and should not be used as the LiveAvatar cost. The vendor explicitly says live plans and pricing are separate. That boundary is healthy, but it means a comparison needs the current LiveAvatar quote or plan screen, not the widely published $1–$5 recorded-avatar minute.

HeyGen's advantage is identity continuity across recorded presenter videos, translation, API output and live interaction. That is commercially meaningful for a brand that wants one authorized Twin across surfaces. It is irrelevant to a buyer building only a support agent.

Freeze the architecture before measuring latency

For Tavus, document whether the full pipeline or Echo mode is used and name the STT, LLM and TTS configuration. For HeyGen, record the LiveAvatar model, knowledge/agent stack and any external services. Otherwise a latency comparison is really two undisclosed systems.

Run sixty sessions across desktop and mobile. Include interruption, silence, user walking away, camera disabled, poor bandwidth, reconnect, unsupported request and human escalation. Measure:

Blind users to the vendor. Naturalness should be scored after task completion, not before it.

Governance can outweigh a small latency win

Tavus requires explicit Replica consent and prominent disclosure that the user is interacting with AI. HeyGen requires consent for a Digital Twin and publishes biometric and privacy notices. The buyer still needs a revocation workflow, user disclosure, transcript/recording policy and guardrails for sensitive claims.

Ask which vendor can delete a subject's identity and prevent new use across every environment without relying on an engineer's memory. Ask how a live session is logged without retaining more biometric or conversational data than necessary.

Decide by ownership of the stack

Choose Tavus when the product team values a documented modular conversation pipeline, clear included minutes and direct control over session objects. Choose HeyGen when a single governed identity across recorded, translated and live video removes real operational duplication. Do not select either from a staged naturalness demo; select the one that completes the real task with controlled cost, consent and failure recovery.
