ElevenLabs and Descript overlap at AI-generated speech, but they are not the same product shape. ElevenLabs is a voice suite for generation, cloning, dubbing and API workflows. Descript is a broader media editor; Regenerate is one feature for repairing or changing recorded speech through the transcript.

The right choice begins with one question: are you creating new narration, or correcting speech that already exists?

Evaluate ElevenLabs when the main job is generating voiceover from text, organizing longer projects, using distinct instant/professional cloning paths, dubbing or connecting an API.

Evaluate Descript when the main job is editing audio/video through a transcript, repairing awkward cuts, changing words in an existing English recording or keeping broader media editing in the same suite.

Choose ElevenLabs for new voice production

ElevenLabs Studio documents text entry and imports, projects, chapters and paragraph-level generation. Model-specific voice documentation supports multilingual production, while adjacent product documentation covers dubbing and a text-to-speech API.

It also distinguishes Instant Voice Cloning from Professional Voice Cloning. The professional path requires more training audio and verification and is restricted to the account holder's own voice. That distinction is useful when cloning is a planned, authorized production capability rather than an incidental editor feature.

The retained evidence does not settle every price or export detail. Current pricing must be rechecked, and a buyer requiring a specific format should confirm the exact plan.

Choose Descript for transcript-led repair

Regenerate lets the user select speech through the transcript and smooth awkward edits or change words without rerecording. The changed-word workflow has strict qualifications: English audio only, a maximum of 250 characters per action, no crossing a scene boundary, surrounding original audio and an authorized custom AI Speaker. Stock voices are not supported for changed words.

This can solve a materially different problem from generating a new chapter of narration. A podcast host or video presenter may use Regenerate to correct a line inside an existing project, while a creator generating an entire new voiceover may prefer a dedicated generation surface.

Descript's broader AI Speakers and dubbing features should not be collapsed into Regenerate. The suite's text-to-speech supports multiple languages and models, but that does not make Regenerate multilingual.

Voice cloning and authorization

ElevenLabs' Professional Voice Clone requires the account holder's own voice and verification. Descript requires explicit recorded authorization from the person whose custom AI Speaker is created; an authorized representative may act for the person with that recording. Descript also refuses deceased, non-consenting, unable-to-record and artificial-source voices in its documented workflow.

These are documented policy/process requirements, not proof that misuse is impossible. Technical cloning availability never establishes permission.

Controls are not directly equivalent

ElevenLabs documents model-dependent pronunciation, phoneme, pause, speed, stability and style/emotion controls.

Descript documents style guidance and tone tags in broader AI Speaker workflows, while the exact pronunciation mechanism was not retained as verified. Cadence is model-defined; after an AI clip is converted to audio, clip speed can be adjusted. Those facts should not be presented as equivalent to native per-generation speed control.

The practical lesson is to test the exact workflow. A control available in Descript TTS may not apply to Regenerate, and a control available in one ElevenLabs model may not apply across the suite.

Pricing and Free access remain unresolved purchase checks

ElevenLabs' researched price observation is conflicted even though specific plan numbers were visible across sources. Descript's public page exposed pairs of monthly figures, but the extracted page did not attach them reliably to billing cadence. The draft therefore does not declare a cheaper product.

Descript has a no-cost plan, but the public evidence checked did not establish whether it supports the full changed-word Regenerate/custom-voice workflow end to end. ElevenLabs Free lacked a commercial license when checked. A free account is not a substitute for a verified production entitlement.

Commercial use does not eliminate underlying rights

ElevenLabs paid-plan output and Descript AI Speaker output both had conditional commercial-use language in the official sources checked. Descript's terms also warn that output may not be unique, copyrightable or infringement-safe and require the user to assess legality and rights.

For either product, commercial eligibility does not grant rights to another person's voice or to scripts and media you do not control.

Treating Regenerate as a standalone multilingual voice studio would obscure the most important difference between them.
